I kiss Josh on the porch. Then I look at my husband and say two words I’ve been saving: your turn.
MICHAEL
Twelve years. That's how long Josh has been my best friend, and the one Brooke says I light up around like someone flipped a switch. Twelve years of losing my train of thought every time he reaches past me. Of my wife reading it on my face before I had a name for it. Then Brooke says your turn and every carefully constructed lie collapses.
I'm in love with my wife. I'm falling for the man who's been part of our lives since the beginning. Those two things don't cancel each other out. They never did.

My ex-wife said I loved them more than I loved her. She wasn’t wrong about any of it. Now I’m at their lake house for the Fourth, freshly divorced and pretending the weekend is casual when nothing about the way Brooke just kissed me on the porch—or the way Michael is looking at me like he's about to—feels casual at all.
I’m not sure I’m brave enough to take what they’re offering, but I’m going to enjoy every moment while it lasts.
